The Elf

GwaetheWhen I began my fantasy romance series, I never realised that elves would feature so prominently. But as most writers will know, characters have a way or forcing themselves into your stories.

The elven character is beloved in fantasy tales such as Tolkien’s and this is the type of elf which has inhabited my world of Thorius. They are tall, lithe and handsome with pointed ears. They dwell in forests and live in trees. They live for centuries but the trade off for a longer life is their low reproductive rate.

There is one important exception. My elves have dark skin and dark eyes. I wanted something different in my elves, something that wold set them apart from other fantasy elves. They have amazing low light and night vision though not as good as nocturnal animals. Their pupils are oval shaped not round.

Initially, the dark elves in my stories were just a far way nuisance in Princess Avenger, before becoming a real threat to Benae and Ramon in The Lady’s Choice. They have evolved from being a single race to having two factions- once dedicated to peace and one to regaining their lands that were taken by humans. They have magic, which is met with suspicion by the humans.

In The Elf King’s Lady, Kain must confront dark elves in a very real way and we meet elven princess Gwaethe Arenil. And now I come to write Gwaethe’s story. How will she ensure peace for her people while fighting a civil war? Who will she enlist to help her achieve her goals. Will she fall in love or is the cause of peace all there is for her?

I look forward to bringing Elf Princess Warrior to you in the future. The first seven thousand words are written, only sixty odd thousand to go!

2016! Happy New Year!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_Final2015 was a huge year for me. No wonder it seems to have flown past. I published four books and just 2 days ago I completed the first draft of The Lady and the Pirate. I can’t wait to share more stories with you in 2016 and am hoping for at least three releases.

Estelle Aranati 1Personally, I lost my mother-in-law which was a huge blow for the entire Rowley family. I’ve named my heroine in the Lady and the Pirate after her in the hope that she will live on in that character. Perhaps Estelle will get to do some of the things Esther never could.

The Lord and the Mermaid coverMy youngest graduated from high school and now faces a bachelor degree at the University of Queensland where I studied many years ago. We moved to Brisbane from Townsville after a sojourn of nine years. Life seems to be coming full circle in many ways.

In 2015 there have been good times and bad, plenty of cricket, laughs and tragedies and more cricket.

The Lady's Choice Cover- newI love this time when we stand at the start of a new year and I’m always filled with optimism. I hope this year brings you more good than bad and a chance to change anything about your life that needs changing.

Princess Avenger Ebook coverFor me, I’m going to embrace 2016 and look forward to a year of discovering new characters, new friends and old and making the most of this life I’ve been granted.

Release Day- The Elf King’s Lady

0515 The Elf King's Lady_FinalToday sees the release of my fourth book, The Elf King’s Lady, Wildecoast Saga Book Two. For those who have read The Lord and the Mermaid, it’s the love story of Kain Jazara and Alique Zorba and it’s a truly magnificent love. These two are beautiful together. Here’s the blurb:

In the midst of a war between elves and men, two unlikely companions find love. But in this battle of ages, can they defy the very blood that courses through their veins?

The human kingdom of Thorius is once again under threat from the dark elven menace. General Kain Jazara has sworn to protect Thorius from all danger, magical or otherwise – but first he must rescue the highborn family of alluring healer Lady Alique Zorba.

Thrown together in their quest to save Alique’s family, and eventually themselves, from the merciless elven clan, the pragmatic General and the impulsive Lady Alique discover an undeniable passion. But when Kain’s world is torn apart by a personal revelation, he turns his back on both Alique and his homeland.

Can Kain find a path back to love and victory in time? Or will he allow revelations from his family’s mysterious past to destroy his relationship, his happiness, and his kingdom?

I hope you love their story. Please leave a comment to win a copy of The Elf King’s Lady.

The Elf King’s Lady- 1 week to go!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_FinalExcitement is building in my world as I count down to the launch of another book. I’m so excited to be bringing you Kane and Alique’s love story in The Elf King’s Lady. Now there is only one week to go until release day.

The winner of last week’s comp was Vik who gets to choose one of my books for free!

This week, simply leave a comment on this blog to go in the draw to win one of my books. Too easy.

So get cracking and make this a big final week!

The Elf King’s Lady- Two Weeks to go!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_FinalI can’t believe it’s only two weeks until The Elf King’s Lady is released and I’m hoping for a big effort from readers for this week’s competition. Kaz won last week’s competition describing her three goals of reading fiction were escape, relaxation and hope.

Kaz wins a copy of my new release, The Elf King’s Lady.

This week, I want you to name, in two words, your favourite romance genre eg it might be fantasy romance, rural romance or many others. The winner will receive one of my books- their choice!

Until next week- getting so close now…

The Elf King’s Lady- 3 weeks to go!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_FinalLast week’s winner, Michelle, used alliteration in her entry which was very cool. I had a great response to my request: four essential traits in a heroine. I guess we get enthusiastic with our ladies as well as our men. And we had every reason to celebrate women after the Melbourne Cup this week. What a fabulous story that was.

This week I am going to ask you to come up with three words to describe why you read fiction. Mine would be: escape, enjoy, inspire. What are yours? The winner will receive one of my books.

Until next week xx

4 weeks until The Elf King’s Lady!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_FinalActually it’s less than four weeks as this is late! Last week’s winner was Pam and her favourite hero, described in five words was: Blonde tall blue eyed hero.

That is certainly one of the stereotypical heroes and a favourite with many. My favourite is more like General Kain Jazara from The Elf King’s Lady or Captain Vard Anton from Princess Avenger– tall, dark, brooding and mysterious; a man not easy to get close to but one who is loyal once he falls in love.

This week, to mark four weeks from release of The Elf King’s Lady, I want to shift the focus to the girls. Please describe in four words, your ideal heroine. The winner can select any one of my books for their very own.

Until next week…

The Elf King’s Lady- 5 Weeks to go!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_FinalLast week’s winner, Kaz, listed her version of romantic fantasy as ‘heroic alpha males supporting strong females’. I have to agree even though I’ve written a story ‘The Lady’s Choice’ with a beta hero and it’s my favourite so far.

In The Elf King’s Lady, hero Kain is definitely alpha: dark and dangerous, commander of the King’s forces, and not one to show his softer side. In Alique, he finds a woman who can match his bravery and intelligence, who won’t give into to his every demand but who, in the end, needs him to save her.

What can be more romantic than a man who stands by his woman, who will never give up on her, no matter how grim things might seem? I think readers will love these two characters, whom they met in ‘The Lord and the Mermaid’.

For this week’s competition, I want you to list five characteristics of the perfect romantic hero- alpha or beta! The winner receives one of my books, their choice!

Until next week…

The Elf King’s Lady- 6 weeks to go!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_FinalThis week, I want to take the words of last week’s competition winner and put them up in blazing lights.  If I fall, knowing I’ll be caught. How beautiful is this sentiment? Over the next six weeks, we’re going to be examining romance and what it means to us. In these words, romance becomes the safety net, the embracing arms, the person who has your back no matter what. These are the attributes we want in our life partner: the rock, the anchor, the unwavering belief that no matter what, we are there for each other. Until death do us part…

This week, I want to know, in six words, what fantasy means to you and by that I mean the fantasy genre. The winner will receive one of my books, their choice.

Until next week…
