Release Day- The Lady and the Pirate

the-lady-and-the-pirate-webcover-finalIt’s finally here- the long awaited release of The Lady and the Pirate, book 3 of the Wildecoast Saga. Featuring pirate Samael Delacost and Lady Esta Aranati, otherwise known as Lady Moonlight. These two are made for each other but it takes a long time and some personal revelations before either of them will admit it.

Samael Delcost 1Samael roams the seas with his dark elven crew, pirating and making himself rich on the hard work of other folk. But there is a secret in his past which sends him on a collision course with Admiral Nikolas Cosara. We met Nikolas in The Lord and the Mermaid so it’s great to see him and his beautiful wife Merielle back in Wildecoast 3.

Estelle Aranati 1Lady Moonlight seeks to prop up her impoverished estate by smuggling in her spare time. Her ship is her connection to her dead father and her only means of escape from her obligations to her people. Combine that  with a younger sister who has magic in her armory and you have the recipe for some fireworks.

This is a rollicking yarn with two new characters in a familiar setting, Wildecoast and the country and oceans around the King’s seat. Look out for the next book in the series where we will get to know Esta’s sister Katrine a little better.

Happy reading.

The Lady and the Pirate- Pre-orders Open!

the-lady-and-the-pirate-webcover-finalWow, it’s been some ride over the last five years. I took a moment today to reflect on all the milestones I’ve ticked off with my writing over that period.

There was that exciting call, in March 2012, from Carol George of Penguin, with my first publishing offer for Princess Avenger. I made a trip to  the Romance Writers of Australia conference on the Gold Coast where the Destiny imprint authors shot a video, launched the imprint and had our author shots taken. It was a massive weekend and none of us could know how the next few years would unfold.

Princess Avenger Ebook coverThe next year Penguin released The Lady’s Choice, the second book in this fantasy romance series that I am absolutely hooked on writing. I decided I wanted to write a love story featuring a mermaid but when that was rejected I had a big decision to make. Find another publisher (if I could) or venture into the scary and unknown world of self-publishing.

At the time I just didn’t have enough confidence to step onto the self-publishing pathway and so I pitched The Lord and the Mermaid to Momentum (Pan Macmillan). Hayley Nash loved it and offered me a two book contract as long as we began Momentum’s own mini series. The Wildecoast Saga was born. The covers were amazing and I had The Lord and the Mermaid and The Elf King’s Lady both released in 2015.

The Lord and the Mermaid coverI began writing the book that I will release on the 14th of February- The Lady and the Pirate. I loved the freedom that came with having a pirate and a smuggler butt heads, not to mention the intrigue of a member of the aristocracy carrying on an illegal operation in a man’s world. Alas, hard times had fallen on the ebook publishing industry and Momentum didn’t want my story.

I had already begun self-publishing with the titles that were returned to me from Penguin, and added to my stable with Princess in Exile, the sequel to Princess Avenger, so I was keen to expand yet again.

36794-095On Valentine’s Day, February 14th 2017, I will publish The Lady and the Pirate on Smashwords and Amazon. It is now ready for pre-order at your favorite ebook retailer and will soon be available in print.

I hope you enjoy reading The Lady and the Pirate as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Behind the Scenes- The Lady’s Choice

Wanting to know more about The Lady’s Choice and the inspiration behind the story? Here’s an interview I did with Ms Destiny way back when the book was first released.

The Lady's Choice Cover- newOver a lazy, late afternoon drink I recently caught up with Bernadette Rowley, author of The Lady’s Choice, to talk about bad boys, hidden passions and romance.

Bernadette, I’m wowed by your new book. It’s an enthralling mix of lust, palace life, plotting princesses and swashbuckling swordsmen – have you always been a fantasy fan?

I’ve been a fantasy fan since my aunt introduced me to the genre when I was about fourteen. She gave me The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks and since then it’s been one fantasy saga after another for me.

Your writing suggests that some intense passions lurk beneath your neat, elegant exterior?

I’m passionate about many things including following your dreams and more than that, being allowed to dream. Intense? Yes, I am that, certainly. I guess my heroines reflect that quality that I have – go after what you want.

Ramon is simply divine … who were you thinking of when you created him? Who would play him in a film?

Princess Avenger Ebook coverWhen I created Ramón initially, he was just a secondary character in Princess Avenger, my first book. But I quickly realised he needed his own stage. I see him as every woman’s best friend, the perfect man; the man you can count on who will put your needs before his always; and he has unforgettable good looks and impeccable grooming.

I would nominate Liam Hemsworth. He has gorgeous blond looks, amazing blue eyes, is the right height and has a great body.

Your hero is a character with a strong sense of what’s right – I prefer someone a bit naughty – you?

I prefer someone naughty and probably dark-haired as well. There’s definitely something within my nature that is drawn to the ‘bad boy’ so it was quite a challenge to see if I could write a sexy beta male.

Your heroine, Lady Benae, has to choose between passion and duty – have you been torn like that?

I’m not too good at duty and would go with passion any day. I think we are all torn between what we ‘should’ do and what we truly wish to do. I try to make decisions that make me happy because you only get one shot at life.

Benae prayingCruelty and power play a part in your plot – did you find this challenging to write?

I don’t find power and cruelty difficult to write. It seems to be quite as natural for me as writing about love and loyalty. I believe we all have two opposing natures that hopefully are in balance. Fantasy holds much darkness as well as uplifting themes so I’ve had a steady diet of these contrasting values in my reading.

Unless there’s a yacht and a millionaire involved, I’m not very outdoorsy, but I so adored Benae’s horse, Flaire, I can imagine myself galloping off into the sunset, astride some magnificent steed. Clearly you adore horses?

I’ve always loved horses and rode, bred and trained them in my teens and twenties. They’re magnificent creatures and so rewarding to work with.
Destiny Promo PhotoBenae and her maid are more like sisters than mistress and servant – are you a believer in having good female friends or are they superfluous if you have the attentions of a gorgeous man?

I find I need contact with my close female friends on a regular basis but my husband is my best friend. I’ve always found girlfriends wonderful for sharing your difficulties and bringing problems back into perspective. A problem shared is a problem halved they say.
We know you are a vet and have a family, tell us something else about yourself that will shock or surprise us?

I love being on stage. Before moving to Townsville in 2006, I was part of a ladies barbershop quartet and chorus and just adored singing for a crowd. It was one of the most amazing and fulfilling periods of my life.

You write great romance – what’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done in real life?

I’m still doing the most romantic thing I’ve ever done and that’s being part of a loving and supportive marriage. I’ve been married to Michael for coming up 29 years and we’re now entering the phase where children are moving out. We’ve faced some really difficult times, but we’re still best friends and I can’t imagine life without him.

The Lady’s Choice

Lady Benae Branasar will sacrifice her ‘happily ever after’ for an arranged marriage with a powerful prince. But can she turn her back on her feelings for the prince’s squire, Ramón Zorba? Ramón is obsessed with the prince’s daughter and tries hard to ignore fiery Benae. As they are drawn inexorably together, Benae and Ramón must choose between keeping personal vows and being true to each other.

I’ll tell you a secret. The Lady’s Choice is my favourite of all my stories. I’m very attached to the heroine, Benae, and I think it’s because she has such a close relationship to her horse. She reminds me of myself as a young woman. If you enjoy my stories, please leave a rating and a brief review at your favourite ebook retailer.

The Elf

GwaetheWhen I began my fantasy romance series, I never realised that elves would feature so prominently. But as most writers will know, characters have a way or forcing themselves into your stories.

The elven character is beloved in fantasy tales such as Tolkien’s and this is the type of elf which has inhabited my world of Thorius. They are tall, lithe and handsome with pointed ears. They dwell in forests and live in trees. They live for centuries but the trade off for a longer life is their low reproductive rate.

There is one important exception. My elves have dark skin and dark eyes. I wanted something different in my elves, something that wold set them apart from other fantasy elves. They have amazing low light and night vision though not as good as nocturnal animals. Their pupils are oval shaped not round.

Initially, the dark elves in my stories were just a far way nuisance in Princess Avenger, before becoming a real threat to Benae and Ramon in The Lady’s Choice. They have evolved from being a single race to having two factions- once dedicated to peace and one to regaining their lands that were taken by humans. They have magic, which is met with suspicion by the humans.

In The Elf King’s Lady, Kain must confront dark elves in a very real way and we meet elven princess Gwaethe Arenil. And now I come to write Gwaethe’s story. How will she ensure peace for her people while fighting a civil war? Who will she enlist to help her achieve her goals. Will she fall in love or is the cause of peace all there is for her?

I look forward to bringing Elf Princess Warrior to you in the future. The first seven thousand words are written, only sixty odd thousand to go!

Princess in Exile Release Day!

Princess in Exile Ebook CoverToday sees the release of my fifth book, Princess in Exile. Even more exciting for me is the fact that this book continues the story of Princess Alecia Zialni, whom readers met in my first ever published book, Princess Avenger.

I can’t tell you how exciting and satisfying this day is. I can finally give my readers what they’ve been craving since Princess Avenger first hit the marketplace. And there is more to come in Alecia’s story. Here is the blurb:

Princess Alecia and shapeshifter Vard flee Brightcastle, pursued by mercenaries, with Vard battling transformation into his least controllable form- the bear. They travel to a lost city, hoping a sorcerer there may help Vard master his gift. The lovers soon discover he has his own devious agenda. Will Vard and Alecia escape? Can their love survive Alecia’s fear of Vard’s animal forms? What secret does the princess hold with the power to destroy Vard’s trust?

The answers to all this and more are contained in the pages of Princess in Exile, the dark sequel to Princess Avenger.

2016! Happy New Year!

0515 The Elf King's Lady_Final2015 was a huge year for me. No wonder it seems to have flown past. I published four books and just 2 days ago I completed the first draft of The Lady and the Pirate. I can’t wait to share more stories with you in 2016 and am hoping for at least three releases.

Estelle Aranati 1Personally, I lost my mother-in-law which was a huge blow for the entire Rowley family. I’ve named my heroine in the Lady and the Pirate after her in the hope that she will live on in that character. Perhaps Estelle will get to do some of the things Esther never could.

The Lord and the Mermaid coverMy youngest graduated from high school and now faces a bachelor degree at the University of Queensland where I studied many years ago. We moved to Brisbane from Townsville after a sojourn of nine years. Life seems to be coming full circle in many ways.

In 2015 there have been good times and bad, plenty of cricket, laughs and tragedies and more cricket.

The Lady's Choice Cover- newI love this time when we stand at the start of a new year and I’m always filled with optimism. I hope this year brings you more good than bad and a chance to change anything about your life that needs changing.

Princess Avenger Ebook coverFor me, I’m going to embrace 2016 and look forward to a year of discovering new characters, new friends and old and making the most of this life I’ve been granted.

FireworksMay 2016 bring you everything you dream of!
