Looking back over 2017, I notice a vague sense of unease. Have I achieved enough? What could I have done that would have made this year more successful? How can I look ahead at 2018 with an increased level of optimism?

I’m sure many of you will feel the same. For me, I believe that unease is caused by not having achieved enough in my writing. I took on extra days at work and added responsibility which led to reduced writing time. I fell victim to procrastination so that even when I did have time, I didn’t write enough. Even when I knew I was falling into this trap, I found it difficult to drag myself out.

So in 2018, I will write more and procrastinate less. I will get two new books out to my readers. One is written and one half written so that shouldn’t be too difficult. I will start the next book. I will  market all my titles. By the end of 2018, I will be earning enough from my books to support my writing ‘habit’.

At this time, I believe it’s important to focus on the positives from the year. All my family is happy and healthy. Michael and I bought an apartment which means no more dead money. Sam turned 21 and we enjoyed a celebration with our friends. Sam and Tom went overseas for the English cricket season, Tom scoring 1000 runs! They returned safely. Our family grew closer, along with extended family and friends.

I published The Lady and the Pirate and have had some encouraging reviews. I joined three new writers groups which I’m sure will be a great support in future. Michael had his gall bladder out, bringing to an end a year of hell(2016). He, Sam and James began working on a farm which might lead to all sorts of opportunities in the future. James got a job offer from the Defence Force and 2018 should see him enter that organisation.

What are your regrets from 2017 and what will you do to rid yourself of them in 2018? Will you make that doctor’s appointment, apply for that job, take the plunge with a mortgage or even start writing that book you always promised yourself? Will you start studying, travel overseas, de-clutter your home or start a family? Will you take a chance on love? Will you commit to reading 50 books and leaving reviews for the authors?

Whatever you decide you will do, take action now. Don’t let this special new beginning be wasted. I’m going to make 2018 a big year for my writing. No regrets in 2018- let that be our mantra- no regrets in 2018.

Until next year
